There is no power in the dreadlocks of Samson.

There is no power in the dreadlocks of Samson.

The famous judge, Samson who judged the Israelites for 20 years has been believed to be empowered by his dreadlocks. And Dililah is seen as a wicked woman because she caused the shaving off of seven strands of his dreadlocks. But the question is, what is a consecrated man doing on the lap of a prostitute? What is he doing in the land of his enemies, the exact people (philistines) God called him as a judge to deliver his people from. Well, I will start from somewhere. I’m hinged on where Samson’s power hangs. His dreadlocks? May be yes or may be no! Let’s find out.
Samson was consecrated to the Lord as a Nazarite, which is A Jew bound by a vow to:
“1. Leave the hair uncut,
2. Abstain from wine and strong drink,
3. Abstain from dead bodies and
4. Practice extraordinary purity of life and devotion. Judges 13: 4-5.”

When Samson was born, the bible recorded; “And the Spirit of the lord began to stir him while he lived in Mahaneh-dan,…”

Then one day, when Samson grew up and was going to Timnah with his parents to get a wife for him, a young lion suddenly attacked Samson near the vineyard of Timnah. What happened baffled me, let’s read below..

“At that moment the SPIRIT OF THE LORD came powerfully upon him, and he ripped the lion’s jaws apart with his bare hands. He did it as easily as if it were a young goat. But he didn’t tell his father or mother about it.” Judges 14:6.

My thought: if Samson’s power is in his dreadlocks, he should have just attacked the lion without the Spirit of God resting upon Him. Well, let’s keep going. let’s see what happened next.

“Later, when he returned to Timnah for the wedding, he turned off the path to look at the carcass of the lion. And he found that a swarm of bees had made some honey in the carcass.
He SCOOPED some of the honey into his HANDS and ATE it along the way. He also gave some to his father and mother, and they ate it. But he didn’t tell them he had taken the honey from the carcass of the lion.” Judges 14:8-9

My thought: what did Samson do just now? He broke one of the rules of his consecration and that is; not just touching a dead body but also eating what comes out of it. And gave to his parents. His consecration diminished by minus (-)1. Let’s see what happened next..

“Then the SPIRIT OF THE LORD came powerfully UPON HIM. He went down to the town of Ashkelon, killed thirty men, took their belongings, and gave their clothing to the men who had solved his riddle. But Samson was furious about what had happened, and he went back home to live with his father and mother.” Judges 14:119

My thought: The Spirit of God? I thought Samson is powerful with his dreadlocks? So even with His dreadlocks he is still powerless? Well, let me keep examining this man of valour. The next action…

“As Samson arrived at Lehi, the Philistines came shouting in triumph. But the SPIRIT OF THE LORD came powerfully upon Samson, and he snapped the ropes on his arms as if they were burnt strands of flax, and they fell from his wrists.
Then he found the jawbone of a recently killed donkey. He picked it up and killed 1,000 Philistines with it.” Judges 15:13-15

My thought: Again? The Spirit of God came powerfully on Samson. Well, can we be given a chance to know what will become of Samson without the Spirit of God resting on him. But I can see that the Spirit of God is not indwelling in this man. The spirit of God visits him whenever the need be. But that isn’t yet my target, is the power of Samson in his dreadlocks? Let’s keep going. The next thing that happened, Samson laid in the lap of Delilah, toiling with his consecration. Until the last big joke…

Dear Samson, you have touched and eaten from dead body, now your head is about to be shaved off. Samson, don’t you think why the spirit has been resting upon you is because you are still consecrated? Well, I hope you survive this.

“Finally, Samson shared his secret with her. “My hair has never been cut,” he confessed, “for I was dedicated to God as a Nazirite from birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as anyone else.” Judges 16:17

My thought: “if my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as anyone else.” What! Another consecration is going down. What is this young man saying? I hope Delilah won’t do this.

“Delilah lulled Samson to sleep with his head in her lap, and then she called in a man to shave off the seven locks of his hair. In this way she began to bring him down, and his strength left him.
Then she cried out, “Samson! The Philistines have come to capture you!”When he woke up, he thought, “I will do as before and shake myself free.” But he didn’t realize THE LORD HAD LEFT HIM.
So the Philistines captured him and gouged out his eyes. They took him to Gaza, where he was bound with bronze chains and forced to grind grain in the prison.” Judges16:19-21

My thought: Hmmmm, when Samson woke up He thought, “I will do as before and shake myself free.” But he didn’t realize the LORD HAD LEFT HIM. I thought the bible will say, “He didn’t realise that His dreadlocks had been shaved off.” So it was the Lord empowering Him to do these things?
This is mind blowing! But Please, what is a consecrated man, a bishop, an apostle, a follower of Christ doing on the lap of a prostitute? Do they have anything in common? Are they discussing bible or discussing how to grow spiritually? Why are you mingling with an unbeliever? Because of pleasure? Why are you visiting where you shouldn’t? Why are you loitering in the territory of your enemy the Lord is planning to deliver you from? I think you must loose something before you stand from that lap or before you return from where you shouldn’t go.
Well, finally he desecrated himself in the highest order. Samson is no longer a Nazarite. He has become an ordinary Jew. His consecration was the secret of his strength. He made his body a temple for the Holy Spirit to come and dwell, thus the spirit of God descends each time comfortably and work through him. Am still thinking though. Can this young man still do any other thing since His dreadlocks assumed to be his strength is shaved off? Let’s see..

“Half drunk by now, the people demanded, “Bring out Samson so he can amuse us!” So he was brought from the prison to amuse them, and they had him stand between the pillars supporting the roof.
Samson said to the young servant who was leading him by the hand, “Place my hands against the pillars that hold up the temple. I want to rest against them.”
Now the temple was completely filled with people. All the Philistine rulers were there, and there were about 3,000 men and women on the roof who were watching as Samson amused them.
Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign lord, remember me again. O God, please STRENGTHEN ME just one more time. With one blow let me pay back the Philistines for the loss of my two eyes.”
Then Samson put his hands on the two center pillars that held up the temple. Pushing against them with both hands,
he prayed, “Let me die with the Philistines.” And the temple crashed down on the Philistine rulers and all the people. So he killed more people when he died than he had during his entire lifetime. Judges 16:25-30

Me: what!? did you hear that prayer of Samson? He said O God strengthen me, and not o God restore my dreadlocks. If Samson’s strength was in his dreadlocks, why will he kill more than ever before after shaving off his dreadlocks? He prayed to God because he knew his strength is from above. He knew it was the Spirit of God that stirs him. Delilah didn’t betray Samson, she only defiled his consecration. The strength of Samson was at stake from the very day he touched and ate from a dead lion. The Spirit of God cannot dwell in a defiled body.

But grace and mercy sustained him until the day he finally and totally defiled His consecration and made himself a normal Jew.

Have you ever thought of why the spirit of God need to rest upon him each time even when his dreadlocks are there? Because that is the source of his strength or better put, the spirit of God was the strength of Samson.
We are empowered if we are filled with the Holy Spirit.
Sin may not kill you the first day, The Spirit of God didn’t depart from Samson the very first day he touched and ate from the carcass of a dead lion. But the very day he started living as the world (normal Jew).
But God still proved to him that the source of his strength wasn’t from his dreadlocks but his consecration was the centre of attraction of the source of his power. So Samson was blind, and without dreadlocks, but still killed more number of people than when he could see and with dreadlocks.

But unfortunately, He died with the uncircumcised philistines. He died a shameful death. He died in the midst and hands of his enemies.
A man who carry God’s anointing died before idols, whores and ungodly men. Sin can humiliate a man, sin is indeed a reproach, sin can hand you over to your enemies no matter the level of your anointing.

It wasn’t the rod of moses that divided the red sea, it was the Spirit of God that possessed the rod. Without the Spirit of God, the rod will strike severally but won’t divide the red sea.

It wasn’t the dreadlocks of Samson, it was the Spirit of God.
